Help and Frequently Asked Questions

Logging Trips

I log every trip. How do I do that?

Send an SMS after every trip with:

Odometer reading :10462
Business or Personal :b
To: Sidebuddy
10462 b

Helpful hints

  • Hold down the button on your phone for a moment to get a numeral
  • If you forget the B or P, we will assume it's Business. You can change it later.
  • For B or P, we accept any character on that button:
    1

    2
    abc
    3
    def
    4
    ghi
    5
    jkl
    6
    mno
    7
    pqrs
    8
    tuv
    9
    wxyz
    *

    0
    _
    #

For Business, press the button with a 'B' on it once.

Send any of ABC or a 2 and we know it's business.

For Personal, press the button with a 'P' on it once.

Send any of PQRS or a 7 and we know it's personal.

I have a Blackberry. Can I send an email instead?

You can send an email from a Blackberry or anything else. Just put the message in the title as if you were sending an SMS.

Can I just type a trip in when I get to my desk?

Yes.

It's really easy to add, insert, change and delete trips. Read the Edit page for more information.

My phone uses Predictive Text. Is this OK?

Yes - most of the time, for most phones.

It's probably better to hold each key for a moment to get a numeral.

Predictive text (or "T9") is when your phone predicts the word you are typing in.

So, if you start typing your odometer reading, you may get a bunch of letters instead.

Sidebuddy understands predictive text - it converts the letters to numbers.

However, some phones start questioning you with a '?' after a few nonsensical letters, and zeroes cause a space.

So sometimes it causes problems. You can always correct them later.
